The Freedom Programme - Working with survivors of domestic violence and abuse
The Freedom Programme was devised by Pat Craven and is a twelve-week programme that aims to enable participants to learn more about the reality of domestic abuse.
The programme aims to:
- Help women understand the beliefs held by abusive men and in so doing, recognise which of these beliefs they have shared
- Illustrate the effects of domestic violence on children
- Assist women to recognise potential future abusers
- Help women gain self esteem and the confidence to improve the quality of their lives
- Introduce women to community resources such as Women's Aid, the police, domestic violence unit, the Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre, local colleges, etc.

The Power to Change Programmes- Working with Survivors of domestic violence and abuse
Power to Change Programmes were recently written and produced by the organisations participating in the Daphne Project “ Survivors speak up for their dignity-supporting victims and survivors of domestic violence”. Women’s Aid Federation of England collaborated with partners from Hungary, Estonia, Portugal and Italy and developed these programmes.
Power to Change Programmes include the following two modules
- Power to Change - Self-Esteem Programme
- Power to Change - Educational Self Help Programme
Self Esteem Programme
This is an educational and therapeutic programme that is delivered in the form of workshops for those who wish to build their self esteem. It is not necessarily just for those who are currently experiencing or have experienced domestic abuse, as it does not include specific sessions on domestic abuse issues. The programme concentrates on self worth, boundaries, assertiveness, needs and rights therefore making it suitable for preventative work, especially with younger groups.
Educational Self Help Programme
This is an educational and therapeutic programme that is also delivered in the form of workshops and is very similar to the Pattern Changing Programme. The programme is designed to enable the participants to make positive changes in their lives, which will allow them to move out of the pattern of abusive relationships. It contains some of the elements of the self-esteem programme but it combines this with a strong focus on the dynamics of abusive relationships.
Both Power to Change Programmes are offered along with Bridge Associates full and robust assessment service and our commitment to work closely with referrers to ensure appropriate support. We also provide a comprehensive evaluation of outcomes report.
Healthy Relationship Courses- Working with young people or adults.
Bridge Associates are able to deliver Healthy Relationship Courses, which are specially designed to match with individual organisations needs.
It is widely acknowledged that if young people are supported in learning how to keep themselves safe and enjoy healthy relationships then this can contribute to their current and future physical and emotional health. There are both short and long term benefits to be gained from this service not only to the young people concerned but also in broader terms, to society.
Broad aims of these courses are to enable young people to explore and understand more about their relationships and can include:
- Components of healthy and unhealthy relationships
- Personal boundaries
- Belief systems and attitudes towards relationships
- Raising their sense of self worth, self-esteem and needs.
The programmes are delivered in the form of workshops and are suitable for any setting including education.
